Inspired.

Maybe it’s just this day and age, or my generation, but I find that most of my inspirations are sourced from the Internet.  While the Internet is a wealth of knowledge and creativity, I appreciate a “wow” piece of inspiration when I find it in person much more.

I originally had a different plan for this post, but as of yesterday that changed.  I had the chance after church to attend a restaurant that just opened in my hometown of Whitewater, WI.  Most people believe Whitewater to be only a college town, but yes, people do actually live there.  A good friend, Tyler Sailsbery, is the head chef and owner of the restaurant, The Black Sheep.  His cooking is impeccable, his prices are a slap in the butt compared to his talent, and his new restaurant will hopefully open the small town of Whitewater up to exciting (and stylish) changes.

For most of the lovely meal I sat amazed at the awesome interior skills of that which he utilized.  I immediately was drawn to the concrete countertop of the bar and the open windows viewing into the kitchen.  I didn’t fail to notice the sweet touches like the extra bobby pins in the bathroom and the purse hooks at the bar, both of which every lady appreciates.  The restaurant is located in downtown Whitewater in one of the historical buildings, meaning that the the exposed brick on the walls in 100% natural.  The style is urban and rustic; a great marriage of masculine and feminine.  I could obviously go on and on about the style of this place, but I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

One of the most unique things about The Black Sheep is Tyler’s commitment to keeping the food he serves local.  “We work with local farmers and producers to bring in local and fresh wine, meats, cheeses, and produce, whenever possible. We go to the farms to see how the animals are cared for and that the land is protected. We purchase just enough to keep fresh products rather than fill freezers. We are passionate about food.” (EatAtBlackSheep.com) The menu changes with the seasons because produce availability changes as well, ensuring the truth behind his words.

I’ve had the personal opportunity to try a couple of the menu items even though I ate from the brunch menu yesterday.  The delicious Lamb ravioli with mushroom and rosemary cream (14.95) was rich and savory in taste, a personal favorite of my mom’s I believe.  But my personal favorite was the oven roasted cedar plank salmon (14.95), undoubtedly the best salmon I have ever tasted, and at the time I had recently had my wisdom teeth removed people!  It literally came on a slab of wood!  My mouth is watering for it as I write this post.

Truthfully, I promised myself that I never wanted to be a foodie blog (so many people do it much better than I ever could).  What can I say, I have a passion to eat food, not write about it.  But this is an exception.  When a restaurant can combine a spectacular atmosphere with impeccable food is a rare achievement.  So if you’re in the area, or feel like taking a drive, head to the The Black Sheep in Whitewater, WI, or find out more info at EatAtBlackSheep.com.
